Accumold began in a rented garage in 1985. Our primary focus was and still is on very small micro sized parts that other companies can't produce. Our original custom designed Micro-Molder® was designed to help manufacture parts with minimal waste and short cycle times for electronic component manufacturing. Although there have been many improvements over the years the basic processes have remained the same.
Today the company now focuses on industries that require fast turn around and complex parts for high tech industries such as Micro Electronics, Automotive, Fiber/Optics, Medical, and Military, as well as new emerging markets and technologies.
Our founders established high standards of quality when the company began. These standards still exist today! We still have many of the original customers that entrusted their most valuable parts production to us. We believe this is due to our professional management staff, expert tool makers, and our top notch production people.
Products/Services:
Micro-sized parts are produced in our own micro-molding machines, utilizing processes that we started our business with over 20 years ago. Our Micro-Molded parts range from about 1/2 inch in size to parts measured in microns. These components often have complex geometry and very tight tolerances.
Accumold builds specialized molding machines for this unique capability. The machines are engineered to handle volumes from prototypes to 5,000,000 or more parts per year while maintaining consistent, precise tolerances that are unique in the industry.
The specialized tooling and molding for micro-sized components are only available at Accumold. Typical lead times for micro molds are between two and three weeks.
The largest part that we mold is approximately three inches in diameter, close to 1 ounce in part weight, using a 35 ton machine. Micro-sized features and ultra precision tolerances are consistently realized. Using Accumold's proprietary modifications, with standard Boy and Sumitomo presses ranging from 12 ton to 35 ton, parts are made with minimal waste and fast cycle times. Because of the purity of the resin, the precision of the mold design, and the production process, Accumold can produce parts such as fiber optic connectors with an integral lens. Some of the dimensions on this part are held within micron tolerances. This product was developed as result of the combined efforts of the customer's design engineers and Accumold's tool designers, saving material costs and assembly labor as compared to the traditional two piece connector and lens assembly.
Accumold's tooling and automation systems for lead frame molded parts and insert applications are second to none. Components can be singulated and shipped bulk, or tape-and-reel to our customers. The MEMS and IC packaging industries benefit from this specialized capability.
Lead frame packaging technology requires the combination of high quality metal lead frame companies that produce some of the most intricate designs. Using Accumold's unique technology, we can mold plastic on and around all different types of metal, tin, copper, silver, and gold to form a air gap seal. Some of these processes produce completed parts while others are ready for further processing by the customer.
Plastic is replacing ceramic as the packaging materials in some instances. Thermoplastics can provide 85% of the performance of ceramic at 25% of the cost.
Manufacturing lead frame molded parts requires fabrication of a system to feed the metal lead frame into the machine and to extract the complete component from the metal after the plastic has been molded to it. Our systems designers are experts in fabricating a trouble free and efficient system to mold the most sophisticated lead frame molded parts.
Facilities:
Accumold is an ISO 9001:2000 certified company with a state-of-the-art, 38,000 square foot production plant built in 2001. The Accumold facilities are located near Des Moines, IA, in the heart of the Midwest. The building is climate-controlled and includes two class 100,000 clean rooms for electronic and medical applications.
Our facility not only includes space for MEMS packaging and lead frame assembly and, if needed, space for sub system assembly as well.
We're located near Des Moines Area Community College that has specific training and apprenticeship programs for toolmakers and is the source of some of the best toolmakers in the business.
The current 38,000 square foot building was constructed for anticipated growth to allow four times the current annual production. Additional buildings phases can increase current floor space up to 200,000 square feet.
