BlackHägen Design is a cross disciplinary, strategic research and product design firm, supporting start-up through Fortune 50 companies. The Discovery Process and Innovation

BlackHägen Design has significant experience developing Class I, II and III medical devices and supports FDA/QSR and MDD directives for good design practices and quality assurance. BH has played a critical role in client efforts to minimize failure modes associated with operator error through intuitive user interface design. By utilizing interactive models and effective research techniques in global ethnographic studies, BH has maximized the usability of disposable surgical devices and electro-mechanical systems, while enhancing procedural protocols.

Throughout the Discovery phase, BH analyzes (separates and relates), then synthesizes (combines) findings from the user's environment, behavior and experience. These findings provide the foundation for innovation and robust device requirements. We visually summarize user experiences, design opportunities and recommendations in the form of usage scenario maps, industrial design concepts and strategic product plans to baseline marketing requirements. From this foundation, BH delivers innovation, which supports exceptional "best-in-class" product design.

Program Management

At the heart of every BlackHägen Design program is effective and collaborative Program Management. At project commencement, BH seeks to understand all critical requirements associated with the project as defined by four perspectives: Usage, Technical, Production (including regulatory) and Business (including Marketing). An associative mind-map is then developed that must be approved by all stakeholders to ensure project continuity, team buy-in and establishment of design priorities. The basis for successful product development can then be delivered through structured communication and on-time deliverables.

International Presence

After more than a decade of providing research, product development, domestic and offshore manufacturing management services to both the medical and consumer product industries, BH now offers design resources in addition to manufacturing in Asia (certified to ISO 9001) to support our international clientele. By utilizing round-the-clock resources, the time-to-market launch time can be minimized, with product development cycles as fast as three months to tooled samples (case studies available).
